Everything You Need To Know About

The Nitrogen Cycle

Almost!

Water Change

Nitrate can only be removed with consistent water changes

Ammonium

Both fish waste and decomposing food make ammonium which is toxic

Aquarium Life

Nitrate

Much safer and should be present in the aquarium in small amounts

Good

Bacteria

Nitrite

This is less toxic but still not safe

New Tank Syndrome

New Tank Syndrome is when the ammonium in the aquarium builds up and makes the water cloudy and the habitat toxic - this can lead to death in the aquarium.

How to Prevent New Tank Syndrome

When setting up a new tank you should add both conditioner and liquid bacteria into the water several days to several weeks before adding new fish or other aquarium life. This will allow for a colony of good bacteria to build up so when fish are added to the tank, their ammonium can be transformed into less toxic nitrate.
